GLOBALIZATION AND FASHION

Fashion has been changed by the globalization and now is becoming something that everybody has to follow. We live in a society and that’s why people always want to be identified and reflected by something that give themselves security. Also the fashion is so important to people because their dress and hairstyle will define which social group they belong to and it influences the way people think and act, knowing that fashion is not only clothes, but a tendency that people follow for feeling better and comfortable.

Globalization has influenced fashion, by imposing the American culture in the entire world, since the advent of globalization; there has been an eruption of fashion trends that break the barriers of clothing design like never before. American clothing apparel and other foreign products are now able to share and adopt each other’s styles such as jeans, T-shirts and sneakers. The development in today’s fashion industry has allowed it to become one of the biggest economic institutions in the world.

Globalization also influenced the hairstyles, especially in women, that want to comb their hair and have the same hairstyle that the Hollywood actresses have. For example the blond and long hair from celebrities like Paris Hilton, Brittney Spears, Lauren Conrad, is becoming the more used hairstyle and the one that everybody wants to have.
Furthermore, the social groups of urban tribes have a representative hairstyle, promoting that all the people that belongs to those groups such as emos, skinheads, punks and more, has the same hairstyle, unifying them and making people lose their identity.

Technological objects play a big role in the globalization, enabling them to become fashion material. Mostly people don’t use it just for their functions, nowdays the most important factor in technology is the shape, the color, and everything related to the outside, becoming a superficial society. As well in all countries around the world, technological things such as cell phones, cars, iPods, laptops etc… Have a big importance making people have it and rejecting who doesn’t have it is simply have it but in lower quality, creating standards of better or worse person depending of their social position and material things.

Another effect of globalization is the standardization of the products that means that the stores are selling the same products all around the world, for example in fashion there is a lot of clothes stores such as Zara, Bershka, Stradivarius, Hugo Boss, Tommy Hilfiger and more, that have a lot of branches everywhere, selling almost the same clothes to the different countries, promoting people to dress equal, also to lose their ethnic traditions, when people decide to dress as the store say and not as their culture says, and also is promoting everyone one prototype of person and style.

All these factors produce a kind of discrimination whereas people don’t dress the same way and it causes conflicts with people that don’t respect any different style from theirs, also the people feel less than the others, when they aren’t fashionable, it may be because they don’t have enough money to buy what they want or they don’t want to buy it.

In conclusion, fashion is something that represents yourself and is not bad at all, but it has become so important that causes some changes in people, some positive and other negative. People who follow fashion style can forget a lot of basic things such as the identity, personality, respects of the different ways of style, and more things, generating some problems in the society.
